This module introduces students to the structure and function of plants. This helps those hoping to enter employment with the skills and technical language needed to ensure a deeper understanding of how everyday and routine planting and maintenance activities are underpinned by sound scientific principles.

Tailored to suit those new to the subject, this module equips students with tools to recognise 50 of the most common and recognisable plants used in the industry.

The role of soils is fundamental to plant growth. Soils also inform planting choice, landscape operations, and ongoing maintenance. This module introduces students to the wide variety of soil types you will encounter in the industry. It also teaches students about the various growing medias the industry uses to grow plants in.

One of the most commonly asked questions is 'why is my plant dying'? This module introduces students to a range of plant problems and teaches you not only how to recognise them, but also how to manage them. Never has there been a more important time for the industry to have trained employees aware of these plant problems to help monitor and control the spread of numerous pests and diseases that threaten our native plants.

Students will learn how to operate and maintain a wide variety of common Horticultural machinery, including strimmers and brush cutters, hedge trimmers, pedestrian and ride-on mowers. Students benefit from being taught by Lantra accredited lecturers affording you the opportunity to undertake industry certification at discounted rates.

This module teaches students about holistic plant nutrition. It also teaches students to look for signs of nutrient deficiency and to develop the confidence to diagnose issues and rectify them accordingly. It covers a range of fertiliser products and provides plenty of practical opportunities to calculate and prepare application rates.

This practical module focuses specifically on turf. A staple for most landscapers and gardeners, looking after lawns is a specialised and technical area of expertise. From seeding to laying turf, the module teaches students about the importance of various maintenance operations such as scarifying and hollow tining to keep clients' lawns lush and green. With access to excellent resources, students will undertake a variety of practical exercises to ensure confidence and competence in this area.

This course has a number of soft landscaping modules designed to equip students with the confidence to undertake a variety of common soft landscaping projects. From border and planting design through to tree and shrub planting, the modules teach students about the specialist techniques employed, correct tool identification, use and care. Under the supervision of the teaching team, students develop the confidence to undertake various on-campus projects.

Many of our students start their own businesses upon completion of the course. This module equips students with the information you need to ensure your business succeeds by looking at legal structures, marketing, finance sources, and accessing continued support from a range of different organisations.
